1 ~ Joining the Hull

CIMG1875.JPG

This section details the first steps in constructing an Oxford Rowing Shell - joining the hull sections. This is probably the most exciting (and nerve-wracking) part of the project as the skeleton of your boat comes together!

2 ~ Bulkheads & Interior Epoxy

CIMG1905.JPG

How to install the bulkheads. These pieces are critical because they create an air tight seal between the cockpit and the baffels. In addition, they are possibly the most visible things seen by the rower. A little finessing may be required...

3 ~ Exterior Fiberglass

4 ~ Installing Skeg Socket

6 ~ Decking

CIMG2066.JPG

Applying the fore and aft decking.
I saved the scraps to cover the sheer clamps - extra weight, but it looks nice.

7 ~ Coaming

CIMG2123.JPG

Installing the coaming. Probably the most complicated task in building this boat. Your fine woodworking skills will show through here! (I just hacked it together, and the result looks just fine)

8 ~ Piantedosi Row Wing

CIMG2135.JPG

Installing the row wing. The photos don't show it, but I put gobs of thickened epoxy under the pieces of wood.
The instructions for assembling the Piantedosi were less than ideal, to say the least. I hope these photos explain it to others.

9 ~ Exterior Finishing

CIMG2169.JPG

Sand, Varnish, Sand, Varnish, Sand, Varnish, Sand, Varnish, Sand, Varnish. That's about it. I used two quarts of varnish (or mostly so, it gels quickly in the can, so only 3/4 of each can was actually usable). I moved the shell to the garage because of the fumes.

Also includes installing hatches and prepping the sculls.

10 ~ On the water

CIMG2185.JPG

Okay, so I don't have any photos of it on the water yet, but these mean the time is near.

Topping on a stock Jeep Cherokee roof rack is ill-advised for anything but short trips - the 'shell is a LONG boat!
